“What’s Sauce for the Goose Is Sauce for the Gander.” May 20, 1948.

This cartoon was published on the day the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Mundt-Nixon Bill, which called for communists to register with the government. The bill proposed fines and jail sentences for activities deemed “subversive.” It also would have regulated the political activities of communists.

Fallout Shelter, ca 1960

Fallout shelter built by Louis Severance adjacent to his home near Akron, Mich., includes a special ventilation and escape hatch, an entrance to his basement, tiny kitchen, running water, sanitary facilities, and a sleeping and living area for the family of four. It has a 10-inch reinforced concrete ceiling with thick earth cover and concrete walls.  National Archives.

President Truman Wipes Out Segregation in Armed Forces

In 1948,  President Harry S. Truman issued the unprecedented executive order to end segregation in the military.
